The Committee of the Aeschylia

The Committee of the Aeschylia commenced its operations in 1975. It consists of residents of the city-volunteers who relate to different kinds of arts (music, theatre, cinema, visual arts etc.), of members of the volunteers’ team of the festival, of members of the Organising Agency, as well as of students of art schools. The aim of the committee is the participation of citizens who are active in artistic issues, as well as the existence of a collective expression, in order for the festival, that the city needs, to be organised. The Committee undertakes the drawing up of the artistic programme, the organisation, as well as the successful carrying out of the festival. Its aim is to formulate a quality, topical and innovative artistic programme. Its main objective is to promote the festival at a local, national and international level, creating a network through collaborations with artists, entities and organisations, in order for the committee to have constantly available updated information regarding what is going to be presented in the festival the next year. It ensures that the opportunity is given to artists of different kinds of arts, to present their work, as well as to create works of art, inspired by the city of Elefsina. The Committee of the Aeschylia, as an integral part of the community, emphasizes on the drawing up of an artistic programme, which addresses all the vulnerable social groups.

The Old Oil Mill

Kanellopoulou 1 Elefsina, Attica 19200 Greece 2105565613The Charilaou soap factory had been built in 1875 by the brothers Lysandros and Emmanouil Charilaou, who travelled from Galați, Romania to Elefsina, encouraged by the operation of some family-owned, artisanal undertakings. They used to use steam as a source of energy, and olive pomace and other materials as raw materials. The product could be easily carried by ships to Patras, Syros and Piraeus, while the production was reaching 600.000 tones –175.000 of which were being exported to countries of the Mediterranean Sea- and the “Sapon Elefsinos” (Soap of Elefsina) was competing, those years, the French soap production. In 1892, Epameinondas Charilaos, a chemist who had studied in France and Germany, along with another chemist, Nikolaos Kanellopoulos, collaborated as partners and bought the soap factory of Elefsina, which since then had been renamed “E. Charilaos – N. Kanellopoulos”.The factory which, when it operated for the first time, had 20 workers, managed to be employing 90 workers by 1900 (10 of which were women), and 250 workers by 1928. Its operation was halted in the 1960’s. The inactive place of the Old Olive Mill hosts today cultural events, and in its installations, rooms for cultural activities, green places and parking spaces are going to be created.
